Arpit Badkul/Damoh: The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated with great pomp in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. This festival is considered special for the people of Damoh district because Jageshwarnath Dham situated in Bandakpur and this place of Lord Bhole Nath seated in Kharra Ghat is also called Swayambhu Dham. Traditional fairs have been organized here for about 100 years. On this day, people get to eat the famous sweet dish Gadhiya Ghullo of Bundelkhand region at the clock tower of the city. This sweet is sold in the markets only once a year. People come from far away places to buy it.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, this sweet made of sugar is worshiped first. Only after which the family members distribute it among themselves. On Makar Sankranti, Gadhiya Ghulla is sold in the markets only for about 6 days. After this this sweet disappears from the markets and is sold at only Rs 40 per kg. This sweet, a tradition that has been going on since ancient times, is still followed in Bundelkhand. The customer who came to buy this sweet, Neeraj Soni, said that he had come to buy Gadhiya Ghulla, which his mother and sister had asked him to buy.

This sweet has a connection with the Mahabharata period.
Prasanna Nema, who has been selling this sugar sweet Gadhiya Ghulla for the last five generations, told that on the festival of Makar Sankranti, you must have tasted different types of sweets. But the one prepared from pure sugar is Gadhiya Ghulla Sweets. This sweet is only for Bundelkhand. Food will be available in Sagar, Damoh and Chhatarpur districts. Elders used to say that in the Mahabharata period, when sweets were not so popular, this Gadhiya Ghulla was called the sweet of the poor and since then the sweets have been in use. Which you will get in the markets only on Makar Sankranti. People come from far away places to buy it.
